I am not sure why as we could not watch them from here. But they have rebuilt a nest just to the right of our far right pier.  You can watch them just by standing 1/2 way out on the pier without binoculars. It will be fun to watch them for the rest of the summer and so nice of them to nest close this time!

Hope they are not disturbed too much and have a successful hatch in July!

Two loons were back swimming, diving and looking for food. They spent alot of time near where they have nested the last two years.  If loons have a successful nest they will return to that spot so I am thinking these are the same ones that were here before. No way to know for sure. But it was exciting to see them back again.

Our adult loons usually leave the lake to fly south sometime in September.  While I was sitting by the lake on Sunday I saw two loons swimming around near the resort for awhile.  Then one did this dance for us and they swam off after that. It seemed like he was doing a little good bye dance.

We don’t know if any were our nesting pair or not but sure glad they came for a visit, always a wonderful sight to see.

I was not sure what happened so I emailed the loon society and here is her answer:  “My best guess about the eggs: the loons were off the nest for too long for some reason (human disturbance? Intruder loon? Eagle harassment?) and the eggs got too warm or too cold and they were lost.  Eggs will begin to smell if they are infertile and the adults will know not to go back on the nest.” We do know that the Eagles were around a lot and the boat traffic around the 4th is always crazy. So we will not have babies from this nest but there is another nest on the east end of the lake and hopefully that will be successful.

The first picture was taken May 22 and is to the right of the resort in the same spot where she nested last year. The water level came up and flooded out the nest. The second picture was taken June 17 and  is where she built a second nest to the left of the resort. You can see her sitting there from the left pier. She does have two eggs in the nest. So hopefully we will have two babies in July.  It is fun to be able to watch them every day. loon [singlepic id=176 w=290 h=218 float=right]

Natalie, one of our guests, sent us a wonderful album of pictures she took during her week stay at Booth Lake Landing Resort last year. Included in the pictures was an amazing timeline of a chick loon’s nesting, hatching, and first swims. She is a very talented photographer and we are grateful she was able to catch these on camera. Thank you Natalie!

The first few pictures below show the loon on the nest protecting the egg. After the egg hatched, the chick stayed on its parents’ back until it was a little older. A fun fact about baby loons is that they are precocial, which means they are able to swim right after hatching, however they stay under the wing for warmth, and protection from predators. After a few days the parents expect the chick can swim on its own and sticks by the parents side, however it no longer returns to the nest.
