Sweatshirts!!!

Another fun place to stop in Hurley is the outlet for Art Unlimited Sweatshirts. There are all kinds of fun bargains there and yes we all got something new! I am putting a picture of the building up because many of our customers like to go there and it will help to see what they are looking for.

A Day Trip

Our oldest Grandson Colton is visiting us for a couple weeks so last week we decided to take him for a trip to see some fun things.  The first stop we made was in Hurley where they have a tank as a memorial to the WW2 Vets and  Helicopter as a memorial to the Vietnam Vets.  Colton was able to climb on the tank so I took some pictures of him! He had lot of fun climbing around!

A Fun Antique Store

Today we went for a ride to see if one of our favorite antique stores was open yet. It is just south of Minocqua on what was the old Hwy 51 now called county rd L.  This is the spot we bought the old milk carts that are filled with flowers every year on the grass between the Hillside Cabin and Lake Home.  It is always fun to see what new things we can find for around the resort. It wasn’t open today but we will be back to go hunting through all the treasures!

A Fun Road Trip

On one of the colder days this week we took the kids for a ride and had a contest to see how many wild animals we could see.  We ended up seeing over 8 Deer, 4 Eagles, A Fox and a Grouse. It was a  fun way to spend a cold day!

Busy Beavers!

We have been watching the trees in the creek along HWY 70 on the left just past Bill & Linda’s Bait shop. They have been very busy taking trees but I don’t have a clue where! But it is fun the see their progress every day.

Turkey’s

While Dick and I were on our way home from Ironwood the other day I asked him where all the turkeys go in the winter as we had seen so many earlier in the year.  Well, no more did I ask and he stopped the car, turned around and said take out your camera! And we saw 7 of the biggest turkeys I had ever seen!

Joe’s Pasty’s

Another thing you have to do when you visit Ironwood, Mich is have a Joe’s Pasty.  Joe’s looks like a throw back from the 50′s but it has the best Pasty in the U.P.  A Pasty is a pie crust filled with beef, potatoes, and onions and was a complete meal for the miners. And they are delicious!

A Stormy Kromer Hat!

Well the first person to guess what was in the pictures was right, it is a Stormy Kromer!  Now what is that you ask, well here is the story:

In 1903, Wisconsin locomotive engineer George “Stormy” Kromer, a former semi-pro baseball player, asked his wife, Ida, to modify one of his baseball hats for protection against the bitter winds on his wintertime railroad runs. Ida created an all-wool cap with a short brim and an insulated flap that could be pulled down over the ears. The cap was a hit with Kromer’s co-workers, and it gained popularity as railroad crews traveled across the Midwest. The Kromers made and sold the hats out of their home until 1919, when they opened a cap manufacturing plant in Milwaukee.

They are very famous in Ironwood Mich which is just across the boarder into Michigan  1 hour north of us.  And anyone who is out in the cold for long needs a Stormy Kromer to keep warm.  There is more to the story, it went out of production in 2001 and a local of Ironwood was drinking his morning coffee and heard that production was stopped and decided to buy the company and started the Stormy Kromer Mercantile. Last year alone they made 75,000 of the hats.
